Bristol Airport (BRS)

Bristol Airport is south-west of the city, off the A38, with no railway station of its own. That shapes most of the planning: the drive in, the bus if you are not driving, and where to stop if someone is dropping you off. Two things work in your favour. Security is easy to pack for, because liquids up to 2 litres stay in your bag, and the airport's own Silver Zone is one of the cheapest places to park. This guide covers what is worth knowing before you fly from Bristol.

Getting there by car, and the clean air zone

The postcode for most of the airport's car parks is BS48 3DY. The Silver Zone car park uses BS48 3DW and the Short Stay car park BS48 3AQ. If you are parking off the airport, use the postcode in your parking confirmation instead.

  • From the south, on the M5, leave at junction 22 and follow the A38.
  • From the north, on the M5, leave at junction 18 and follow the signs for the A4 and A370 to Bristol and the airport. From the M4, join the M5 southbound at junction 20 and do the same.
  • From South Wales, cross the second Severn Crossing, take the M49 at junction 22 and then the A4 and A370.
  • From Bath, follow the A4 towards Bristol, then the A4174, and follow the airport signs.

The routes from the north and from South Wales take you through central Bristol, where the city's Clean Air Zone charges older vehicles a daily fee. If your car might not meet the standard, check its registration on the government's clean air zone checker before you go, or come in from the south via junction 22 and the A38. Check for roadworks before you leave, too: the airport points to the live map on one.network.

Drop-off: the charge, and the free hour

  • The Drop Off and Pick Up car park is on the Transport Interchange, a 3 to 5 minute walk from the terminal: £8.50 for up to 10 minutes, £10.50 up to 20 minutes, £13 up to 40 minutes, then £30 up to an hour. The maximum stay is two hours. You pay by card or phone at the exit barrier, so there is nothing to remember afterwards.
  • The free option is the Waiting Zone, near the Car Rental Centre: free for the first hour, then £20 an hour, with a frequent bus to the Transport Interchange and a covered bridge to the terminal. Do not leave and come back within 30 minutes, or a parking charge notice is issued automatically. Between 19 October and 18 December 2026 it has moved temporarily, so follow the signs on the day.
  • Blue Badge holders get up to 40 minutes in the Drop Off and Pick Up car park for £8.50, by scanning the barcode on the back of the badge at the exit barrier.
  • Do not stop on the red routes around the airport. Stopping brings a £100 charge, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.

If you are parking rather than being dropped off, none of this applies, and your confirmation email says exactly where to go. Our drop-off charges guide compares Bristol with every other UK airport.

Security: liquids stay in your bag

At Bristol you can carry liquids in containers of up to 2 litres each, and keep them in your bag, with no need for a clear plastic bag. Laptops and other electrical items stay in your bag too. Gels, pastes, lotions and pressurised containers count as liquids, and metal drinks bottles must go through empty. Empty your pockets into your bag, and put coats in the tray with your bag on top.

Bristol reminds passengers that the rules for the flight home may be different, because many airports still limit each container to 100ml. Pack the bag for the return with that in mind.

How early to arrive

Bristol does not publish a single arrival time. Its advice is to give yourself extra time for security, particularly at peak times, and your airline's check-in and bag-drop times, on your booking, are the real deadline. Then work back the time from your car park:

  • Silver Zone, the airport's long-stay car park: about 7 to 9 minutes to the terminal by shuttle.
  • Park & Ride: allow 25 to 35 minutes from the car park barrier to check-in. The Park & Ride we sell is about 15 minutes from the terminal.
  • Meet & Greet: be at the handover point 10 to 15 minutes before your booked time.
  • The multi-storey and Short Stay car parks: a walk of up to 10 minutes.

Which parking suits which trip

Before You Fly lists every Bristol car park we sell in one table, cheapest first, including the airport's own car parks. When we compared prices for an eight-day trip booked about three months ahead:

  • The airport's Silver Zone was the cheapest option, at around £70, with a shuttle of about 7 to 9 minutes. At Bristol, that makes the airport's own long-stay car park the first one to look at.
  • Park & Ride was around £74, with a 15-minute transfer.
  • Meet & Greet started at around £84, about £14 more than the Silver Zone, for handing the car over at the terminal. Photograph the car at handover.
  • The multi-storey and Short Stay car parks, nearest the terminal, were around £190 for the same eight days, so they are best kept for a day or two.

Prices move with the dates, so compare them side by side for your trip. Our Meet & Greet or Park & Ride guide explains how to choose. Whichever you pick, book the flexible rate if your dates might move. It can be cancelled up to 72 hours before arrival for a full refund; see the cancellation FAQs.

Lounges and hotels

Bristol has two lounges, both run by Escape: the Escape Lounge on the first floor of the departure lounge and the smaller Essence by Escape on the mezzanine. Both can be pre-booked, and both fill up on busy mornings, so book ahead in the holidays. Entry to the Escape Lounge opens three hours before your flight. Compare them on our Bristol lounges page.

For a very early flight, the Hampton by Hilton is on the airport site, linked to the car parks and the Transport Interchange by walkways, and there are more hotels nearby. Search Bristol hotels.

Getting there by bus

There is no railway station at the airport, so the bus is the public transport option. Buses stop at the Transport Interchange, just across from the terminal.

  • A1 Airport Flyer: from Bristol Bus Station through the city centre and Bristol Temple Meads station, around the clock. From Temple Meads it takes about 25 minutes, and buses run every few minutes at peak times.
  • A3 Airport Flyer: to and from Weston-super-Mare.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to drop off at Bristol Airport?

£8.50 for up to 10 minutes in the Drop Off and Pick Up car park on the Transport Interchange, then £10.50 up to 20 minutes, paid by card at the exit barrier. The Waiting Zone near the Car Rental Centre is free for the first hour, with a bus to the terminal.

Is there free drop-off at Bristol Airport?

Yes, in the Waiting Zone near the Car Rental Centre, which is free for up to an hour. A bus runs to the Transport Interchange, with a covered bridge to the terminal. Leaving and coming back within 30 minutes triggers an automatic parking charge notice.

Does the Bristol Clean Air Zone affect the airport?

It can affect your route. The routes from the north (M5 junction 18) and from South Wales pass through central Bristol, where older vehicles pay a daily charge. Coming from the south via M5 junction 22 and the A38 avoids the city. Check your registration on the government's checker if you are unsure.

Can I take 2 litres of liquids through security at Bristol?

Yes. Each container can hold up to 2 litres, and they can stay in your bag, with no plastic bag needed. Laptops and electricals stay in your bag too. Check the rules at the airport you fly home from, which may still be 100ml.

What is the cheapest way to park at Bristol Airport?

In our comparison for an eight-day trip, the airport's Silver Zone was the cheapest, at around £70, just under the Park & Ride. Compare Bristol parking for your dates.
