The usual advice is to book airport parking as early as you can, because prices rise as the date gets closer. We looked at more than 21,000 car park bookings made through us since 2020, and at live prices for the same trip on different dates, to see whether that holds up. The short answer: for an ordinary week away, booking months ahead saves a few pounds at most. What you pay depends far more on when you travel than on when you book, and school holidays cost more however early you book them. This guide sets out what the numbers show and how to time your booking.
What our bookings show
We looked at every confirmed car park booking made through us since June 2020 (lounges and hotels left out), comparing the date each booking was made with the date the customer arrived at the car park.
When people book. Most people book close to the date:
- Within two days of arrival: 18% of bookings.
- Three to six days ahead: 18%.
- One to two weeks ahead: 19%.
- Two to four weeks ahead: 21%.
- One to two months ahead: 14%.
- Two to three months ahead: 5%.
- More than three months ahead: 6%.
More than half of all bookings were made within two weeks of arrival, and more than a third within a week.
What people paid. For a 7- or 8-day stay, the typical (median) price paid barely moved with how far ahead it was booked:
- Booked within two days: £66.95.
- One to two weeks ahead: £67.46.
- One to two months ahead: £65.70.
- More than three months ahead: £63.96.
That is a difference of about £3, or under 5%, between booking at the last minute and booking more than three months ahead. In July and August, the busiest months, the gap was similar: £68.09 for bookings made within two days, against £65.90 for those made more than three months ahead.
These are prices people actually paid, across every airport and year, so they mix in different car parks and the price rises since 2020, and the real saving from booking early could be a little bigger or smaller than the figures show. But there is no sign of a large last-minute premium.
Your travel dates matter far more
On 23 October 2026, we searched our own site for the same 8-day trip, arriving at 9am on a Monday, at four airports and on five dates. The first is the October half-term week, three days away. The cheapest car park we sell on each date was:
- Birmingham: £73.99 for the half-term week, then £36.99 for the weeks of 2 and 16 November, and £47.99 for mid-January and the February half-term.
- Gatwick: £58.27 for the half-term week, £44.32 in November, £42.31 in mid-January, and £67.89 for the February half-term, almost four months away.
- Manchester: £47.02 for the half-term week and £44.54 on every other date.
- Heathrow: £57.99 on every date.
The pattern is clear. At Birmingham, the same car park cost twice as much in half-term week as a week later. At Gatwick, a February half-term trip booked nearly four months ahead cost about £25 more than a January trip. Booking early did not avoid the school-holiday price. Outside the holidays, prices were flat for months at a time.
When to book
- For school holidays and Christmas, book when you book the flights. Holiday weeks cost more whenever you book, but booking early gives you the widest choice, and the car park you want is less likely to be full. Our half-term guide and Christmas guide have the dates.
- For an ordinary week, there is no need to rush. Booking a week or two ahead costs about the same as booking months ahead. Just do not leave it until the morning you fly, when you have the least choice and the least time to compare.
- Book the flexible rate if your dates could change. It can be cancelled up to 72 hours before your arrival for a full refund, so booking early on a flexible rate costs you nothing if plans change. See the cancellation FAQs.
- Check the price again before the 72-hour cut-off. If you booked a flexible rate and the same parking is now cheaper, you can cancel for a full refund and book again at the new price.
- Change your dates, if you can. Flying the week before or after a half-term week can save far more than booking early: £37 against £74 at Birmingham in our search.
The type of parking matters too. Park & Ride is usually the cheapest for a week or more; our Meet & Greet or Park & Ride guide compares the two.

Frequently asked questions
Is airport parking cheaper if you book early?
Only a little. In more than 21,000 car park bookings made through us since 2020, the typical price for a week's stay booked more than three months ahead was under 5% lower than one booked within two days of arrival. Your travel dates make a much bigger difference.
How far in advance should I book airport parking?
For school holidays and Christmas, as soon as your flights are booked. For an ordinary week, a week or two ahead costs about the same as booking months ahead. Choose a flexible rate so you can cancel up to 72 hours before arrival if plans change.
Does airport parking get more expensive closer to the date?
Not by much, in our data: a week's stay booked within two days cost about £67, against about £64 booked more than three months ahead. School-holiday weeks cost more however early you book.
When is airport parking most expensive?
In school holidays. In our search of 23 October 2026, the cheapest car park at Birmingham cost £73.99 for half-term week and £36.99 the following week, and at Gatwick a February half-term trip cost about £25 more than one in January.
Can I rebook if the price drops?
If you booked a flexible rate, yes. You can cancel up to 72 hours before arrival for a full refund, then book again at the lower price.
Sorted before you fly.
